I am so excited that you are continuing this journey through the Tanakh with me. This week, we'll talk about the next three days of God's creation, where he creates inhabitants for the space He's prepared.

Starting with Prayer

BLESS ADONAI who is blessed. Blessed is Adonai who is blessed now and forever. Blessed are You, Adonai, our God, Sovereign of the universe, who has chosen us from among the peoples, and given us the Torah. Blessed are You, Adonai, who gives the Torah.

Father God, thank You. Thank you for the time and place You've appointed for me. Thank You for the path You've set before me. Thank You for showing your provision in the field, for shalom and rest, and for all of creation. I pray that we center our souls and our bodies in this sacred space You've intended for us. I pray that we focus our minds on Your Word and I pray that we receive your implanted Word with meekness. Lord, give us wisdom as we study Your character and creation today. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.

14 God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to divide the day from the night; let them be for signs, seasons, days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the dome of the sky to give light to the earth”; and that is how it was. 16 God made the two great lights — the larger light to rule the day and the smaller light to rule the night — and the stars. 17 God put them in the dome of the sky to give light to the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 So there was evening, and there was morning, a fourth day.

20 God said, “Let the water swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open dome of the sky.” 21 God created the great sea creatures and every living thing that creeps, so that the water swarmed with all kinds of them, and there was every kind of winged bird; and God saw that it was good. 22 Then God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, multiply and fill the water of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 So there was evening, and there was morning, a fifth day.

As we move through the book of Genesis, the story unfolds as God begins to fill the world He's created and prepared. Let's see how He fills the world in the next three days.

On the fourth day, God places the sun, moon, and stars in the sky. These heavenly lights and celestial bodies have purpose – bearing light and keeping time.

The sun provides light during the day, while the moon and stars light the night. This is God's creation of consistent cycles of day and night. They serve as timekeepers, signaling seasons, days, and years, providing a framework for agricultural cycles, festivals, and the passage of time.

The word "seasons" in verse 14 is translated as "festivals" and "sacred times" in other translations. The Hebrew word "moedim" is a plural nouoccurs for the first time in verse 14. This word denotes “appointed seasons” or “appointed times,” referring to the festivals of God, His feast days.

This word has opened up my heart and brain to understanding the divine omniscience of God, His time that is outside of our time, but still so intentional. Learning about God's moedim, His appointed times, have taught me about the patterns of His love and patience, His redemption. (Seriously THIS is a whole new Bible study to dig into, but I think we will get to this much more when we get to Leviticus. So... let's put a pin in it.)

So, for now, let's just understand that the lights that now inhabit the sky have a purpose, a divine purpose appointed by God.
